ANA RAJČEVIĆ “ANIMAL: THE OTHER SIDE OF EVOLUTION”
Ana Rajčević is trained in architecture, but she has established her practice at the crossroads of art and fashion, crafting unique wearable objects that combine sculpting techniques and jewellery design, while also challenging the conventional boundaries of these disciplines.
In her overall work, especially with the collection “Animal: The Other Side of Evolution,” she examines ways of transforming the human form through intricate adornments or body sculptures, challenging traditional ideas of beauty and “normality.” Through this collection, she explores the themes of mutation and evolution, as well as the relationships between the rational and the subconscious, the human and the animal.
“Animal: The Other Side of Evolution” is a collection of white, elegantly shaped prosthetic objects that serve as masks, not only altering body features but also suggesting the potential to redefine what it means to be human.
In the era of accelerated scientific progress, the very notion of being human is changing due to the wider and more profound impact that advanced technologies have on our bodies, our behaviour and ways of communicating.
The application of prosthetic and other technological devices in various fields, from medicine to clothing, also opens new horizons for our imagination, filling it with novel forms of “post-humans” and cyborgs.
In this context, Rajčević’s work is particularly intriguing because, in its aesthetics, it combines futuristic and ancestral elements, alluding to new forms of existence that merge the concepts of past and future.
As she states, in her work she “put great attention to form and to the visual impact of shapes, to sculpt an image that is powerful, elegant and timeless,” so it is this timeless quality that emerges from her conceptual foundation, aligning fashion with other creative domains like art and architecture.
Ana Rajčević is an acclaimed fashion artist who works at the intersection of sculpture and fashion design. She specialises in synthetic polymers, metal, and leather. After receiving an international MA scholarship from the University of the Arts London in 2010 for the Fashion Artefact course at London College of Fashion, Ana won the LCF Best Design Award in 2012 and the Accessories Collection of the Year at ITS (International Talent Support) 2012 in Trieste, for her collection of headpieces, “Animal: The Other Side of Evolution”.
